Probably our most conceptual piece out of the four and by that I mean it was the least amount of work - but that's not saying much considering our standards. We knew almost immediately that the most satisfying way to represent law would be to warp the theme of Lady Justice into something we could really get excited about. We proposed the original idea as some sort of stencil that comes out of the wall and into life. Stealing our original stencil image from an artist by the name of Banksy, we hoped to violate copyright law in a way that we could be proud of. Banksy is a very well known graffiti artist who despite the fame of his work has never actually revealed his identity. Not only did he seem like the type of person who would enjoy the fact that we use his art in the way we did, but he also would have to sacrifice his anonymity in order to sue us. We were confident we were breaching copyright law in the correct manner.
In our original vision of the art piece, the scale that Lady Justice is holding would be some sort of static tables. But as the original idea for economics (it was originally a game) began to change the possibility of Law becoming a game started to take hold. Since this was going to be in a bar, we knew that the only way to make it a game people would enjoy playing was to involve alcohol. So we racked our brains for a drinking game that would fit the bill. Of course since we were already biting the stencil art from Banksy (a fact which we felt good about), we weren't sure we'd feel too great about grabbing our game from the classic college collection of simple, stupid and largely frathouse-inspired games. We wanted to go a little bit deeper than the typical college excuse to get drunk, this being a PhD factory after all. So we made a few criteria upon which to build the game:

1) It had to have some kind of Legal theme.
2) it should involve some academic concept relating to law.
3) It, unlike most drinking games, should reward the winner with drinks rather than 'forcing' the loser to drink.
4) It should be funky.

We eventually figured out that there is already a game which is played on a regular basis in the legal realm: Game Theory. We spent a fair amount of time arguing over the actual application for the Prisoner's Dilemma into our drinking game until we finally came up with something simple enough to understand whilst drinking copious amounts of booze. The result was the incorporation of the Prisoner's Dilemma with another game borrowed from game theory best known under the name of Friend or Foe.
The rules of the game are displayed in the gallery overhead, in case you want to play the game at home.

Since the law laid down by the bar Fiasco was that we could not actually paint on the walls, we had to find a loop-hole. The answer came while trying to find a way to 'put' paint on the walls while not actually applying it to the wall. The idea was to create the stencil outline on some medium that we could actually pour some sort of latex-like paint into, in order to peel it up after it dried. While doing that we discovered a large spool of leather in the house where we were working and found ourselves with the ideal stencil material for the cloak of death. We still wanted to put paint on the walls however, so we dried a sheet of latex paint from which we cut out the smiley face and the left hand.

While doing this an amazing fellow from Azerbaijan with hardly any knowledge of either Italian or English decided to come over and make us a beautiful hand out of clay. Thanks Shai! Having no ability to cook and glaze the hand properly we were overjoyed to discover that dipping it in a large diluted solution of water based latex paint gave us a hand that was not only perfectly matched in color and texture with the 2 portions of the piece but also very much protected from the usual problems associated with uncooked clay (problem solving is perhaps our favorite part of art). Though we attempted to make the scale out of only stolen materials we did not in fact manage to do that (it remains unclear whether this detail is due to ethics or inability to put a crime together). The result is a nice mix of funky shadiness and it is perhaps our most beloved child. It’s amazing to watch your dreams come to life when they start from a mere idea and materialize themselves through the usual mix of willpower, friendship, creative problem solving and of course the chao (It’s kind of like the Tao and we use it to describe our dumb luck).
